Review: DOON / by Carey Corp and Loris Landon

Doon / Carey Corp and Loris Landon
Blink (August 20, 2013)     ISBN 9780310742302
Young Adult     Grades 7-10     Rating: 2

The cover of Doon, by Carey Corp and Loris Landon, promises romance and hints of the influence of the musical Brigadoon. Unfortunately, Doon does not deliver on its promises.

While I loved the premise (two teens transported to romantic Scotland), I was disappointed in the main characters, Veronica and Mackenna. The girls are self-centered, boy-crazy, whiny teens. They were not endearing or appealing. At first I was enamored enough by the  stunning cover and the story’s premise to overlook to confusing dual point-of-view and the stereotypical teens,. But the more I read, the more disappointed I became. It was hard to distinguish the differences between Veronica’s and Mackenna’s voice. It was discomforting to see how the girls talked about the boys they met in Doon, how they felt about boys in general, and how those boys treated the girls (aloof, then romantic, then back to aloof).

In the end, reading Doon reminded me of eating a cheap pastry: lovely to look at but not as tasty as it looks.

This was one of Blink’s first books, and I was expecting more. Will I read the next book in the series? I don’t know. I purchased this copy for our library, but I won’t be adding it to our collection.

Disclaimer: Book reviews are my opinion of books I either purchased or received free of cost from the publisher in exchange for a honest review.
