ABOUT THE BOOK
Against Every Warning, She’s Drawn Ever Closer to the Man Known as “Black Heart”
All of England thinks Major Phillip Camden a monster–a man who deliberately caused the deaths of his squadron. But he would have preferred to die that day with his men rather than be recruited to the Admiralty’s codebreaking division. The threats he receives daily are no great surprise and, in his opinion, well deserved.
As nurse Arabelle Denler observes the so-dubbed “Black Heart,” she sees something far different: a hurting man desperate for mercy. And when their families and paths twist together unexpectedly, she realizes she has a role to play in his healing–and some of her own to do as well.
With Camden’s court-martial looming, an old acquaintance shows up, intent on using him in a plot that sends the codebreakers of Room 40 into a frenzy. With their fragile hopes for the future in the cross hairs, Arabelle and Camden must hold on to hope–and to each other–if they want to survive.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Roseanna M. White is a bestselling, Christy Award-nominated author who has long claimed that words are the air she breathes. When not writing fiction, she’s homeschooling her two kids, editing, designing book covers, and pretending her house will clean itself. Roseanna is the author of a slew of historical novels that span several continents and thousands of years. Spies and war and mayhem always seem to find their way into her books…to offset her real life, which is blessedly ordinary. You can learn more about her and her stories at www.RoseannaMWhite.com.
He straightened. “I’ll not see you throw your life and your fortune away on some money-grubbing scoundrel. I may not be good for much these days, but I can at least scare off the rabble.”Unbelievable. “The papers have something right, anyway—you are a madman. A raving lunatic.” She moved to step past him, back onto the street. He blocked her. “You’ll not dissuade me, Arabelle. I’ve made up my mind, so just resign yourself to an escort.”
“I don’t need a . . . a guard dog!” She moved to sidestep him the other direction and, as soon he shifted to compensate, darted around him on the first. He was at her side within a step. “Woof.” It was anger simmering. It had to be. She couldn’t let it be amusement, couldn’t let it be gratitude, and certainly couldn’t let it be hope. “Go home, Camden.”
“I don’t want your company.”
“I’ll have my father—”
“I’ve already spoken to your father. He thinks it capital of me to want to champion you. And has issued a standing invitation for me to come by in the evenings and chat about aviation and the possible applications of the field to his own.” He would. She gritted her teeth, picked up her pace, and angled her face up at Camden, ready to lambast him with the only truth that might get him to call off this ridiculous plan.
You’ll do me more harm than good. The words died before she gave them breath. Because when she looked up, he was looking down, and those too-blue eyes of his weren’t just cold. They weren’t just patronizing. They weren’t just determined. They were the very thing he’d called her—desperate.
“I may not be good for much these days. . . .” He’d been stripped of his squadron, his brothers-in-arms, his purpose. He’d been told he was a villain. He needed to help. Someone, somehow. He needed to prove, if only in some small way, that he was worthwhile. But couldn’t Cass be his proof, or Jeremy, or his mother, or some other person he actually knew? Why did it fall to her?
He needs to help. This time it wasn’t just a thought. It was an echo in that place in her heart where the Lord whispered. She faced forward again. Lord God . . . this is a bad idea. She wasn’t weak, not like Camden had said she was. But she wasn’t strong either. Not when it came to him.

In On Wings of Devotion, nurse Arabelle Denler plays a key role in the healing of Philip Camden, nicknamed “Black Heart.” Philip believes (as does all of England) that he was instrumental in the deaths of his entire squadron, and struggles with survivor’s guilt, refusing to defend himself at his court-martial.
White excels at both character and plot development. Rich in plot twists, historical detail, romance, and adventure, On Wings of Devotion is an excellent read. The faith element is evident but not heavy-handed. Relationships are clean, making the book suitable for adults and older teens. Readers will delight to see characters from her earlier series make an appearance, and will look forward to the final book in this series, A Portrait of Loyalty.
