Three years into the Great War, England’s greatest asset is their intelligence network—field agents risking their lives to gather information, and codebreakers able to crack every German telegram. Margot De Wilde thrives in the environment of the secretive Room 40, where she spends her days deciphering intercepted messages. But when her world is turned upside down by an unexpected loss, for the first time in her life numbers aren’t enough.

Drake Elton returns wounded from the field, followed by an enemy that just won’t give up. He’s smitten quickly by the too-intelligent Margot, but how to convince a girl who lives entirely in her mind that sometimes life’s answers lie in the heart?

Amidst biological warfare, encrypted letters, and a German spy who wants to destroy not just them, but others they love, Margot and Drake will have to work together to save them all from the very secrets that brought them together.

Roseanna M. White is a bestselling, Christy Award nominated author who has long claimed that words are the air she breathes. When not writing fiction, she’s homeschooling her two kids, editing, designing book covers, and pretending her house will clean itself.

A Song Unheard, / by Roseanna M. White (Shadows Over England, 2)
Bethany     ISBN    9780764231810
Adult     Rating:     5

Multi-talented author Roseanna White kicks off a new series, set in pre-World War I (Edwardian) England, when loyalties to one’s roots were questioned as tensions between Germany and England increase.

EXCERPT from A Song Unheard (in which we meet Margot, main character in The Number of Love):

Margot had nearly turned the page that first day. But then . . . something had stopped her. A pattern had caught her eye.

Intuition—that was where it started. But intuition, as Papa had said, was only the first step. The second, always, was mathematics. It wasn’t enough to know that, not when it came to cryptography. One had to know how.

She had spent two full days working it out, to the exclusion of all else. Maman had begun to fret and fuss at her and to chide Papa for his game. Lukas had tried to tell her she was chasing a shadow, that nothing was even there.

But Papa had said nothing. So she had kept working.

Now she could see it so clearly. When she looked at the print covering the page, the encoded letters leapt off and flipped in her mind’s eye to their counterparts, their hidden meanings. She could read the real message trapped within the false one.

When you can read this, you are ready to help me.

White excels at both character and plot development. Her book is rich in plot twists and historical detail, as well as romance and adventure. If you haven’t read her Shadows Over England series, don’t miss it! This new series is another winner, and definitely worthy to read!

  6. I agree — I read a nonfiction book, Code Girls, over Christmas and it was a fascinating account of the U. S. female codebeakers. Made me even more excited to read this book!
